Soft Power Awards
In 2018 the HICD established the “Soft Power Awards” making Greece the only country in the world map of the Cultural Policy and management which encourages and gives prizes through this custom to important personalities who continuously contribute in cultural, scientific and philanthropic acts which in turn are active in promoting Greece abroad and create bridges of dialogue with peoples of different nations through civilization.
During the presentation of the awards which took place in 2018/2019 in the Old Greek Parliament, were honored the following: The Cypriot Mayor of Cambridge Mr. George Pippas, the Professor of Physics of Space Mr. Xenofon Moussas (member of the academic group which has done the research regarding the Antikythera mechanism), the Professor of Orthodontics of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens Mr. Manolis Papagrigorakis (who has participated with his research team in the remake of the face of “Myrtida” found during the excavations in Kerameikos area) and Fr. Antonios who is in charge of the institution “Kivotos tou kosmou” (i.e. “Ark of the world”) (who was also honored as the European Citizen of the Year for the year 2019).
To protect the integrity of the institution of the awards and the transparency of the procedure, the HICD has set up an evaluation committee consisted of three (3) very successful and widely recognized personalities which examines the requests and the candidates and determines the final result by a decision binding on all. The members of the Three-member Evaluation Committee of the Soft Power Awards are as follows:
- President: Apostolos Kavaliotis, Archimandrite, Dr. of Harvard University
- Vice-President: Xenofon Moussas, Professor of Astrophysics of the Kapodistrian University of Athens
- General Secretary: Panayotis Noifelt, President of the Council of Arts of Greece.
In the context of acknowledging its plans for the year 2020, the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy presents for the second year the institution of the “Soft Power Awards” which will take place in the room of the State Officers Club (Lesxi Axiomatikon) of the Military of Athens (Rigillis Road 1, near the Evangelismos metro station) on Wednesday 1 April at 18:00 pm. In the event important personalities from within Greece and abroad will receive official and honorary awards for their contribution.
The event will be honored by the auspices of:
1. Ministry of Tourism 2. EOT 3. KEDE 4. Region of Attica 5. Council of Arts of Greece 6. The magazine “Foreign Affairs”, and many more.
The prize is accompanied by a golden moulded effigy with the symbol of the Goddess Niki (i.e. “Victory”) which is 30 cm heigh and 15 cm wide, made by the renowned Greek sculptor Achilles Vassileiou.
